I pause
I read these words of challenge and comfort
And I am quiet…
“As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
Those words are so simple they get to the heart of the matter
Simple but profound
And spoken by Jesus in a moment of deep feeling
Judas had left Jesus to betray him
Jesus must have felt all sorts of things:
Betrayal, pain, fear
Perhaps
But instead, he focused on love
It makes me think about my own life
What matters to me?
What do I focus on?
So much of my time and energy gets channelled into doing
Doing stuff
Tasks
Meetings
Diary commitments
Trying to prove to myself and to other others
That I’m in control
That I’m right
That I have everything sorted
But here, Jesus invites me to come back to the core
The core of who I am meant to be
Loving
Love
Jesus doesn’t say, produce a to-do list
Jesus doesn’t say, get everything right
Jesus doesn’t say, pack every moment of every hour with activity
Instead, Jesus invites me to love
Gentle, caring, humble love
That’s what really matters
Not the pressure to get everything right
Not the requirement to be perfect
Only to centre to my life around compassion, grace, love
That’s what I need to do
Let go of the noise
Let go of the hurrying around
And come back to love
It’s the only thing that lasts
