Today I look at the newest quantum board style LED grow light from ViparSpectra the XS series. Specifically, I am looking at their 150 watt model the XS1500.

The XS1500 is using Samsung lm301b LED diodes primarily, to make up the majority of the board. They are using Samsung diodes for the 3000k and 5000k. The light also has several Sanan chips making up the 660nm and IR 730nm ranges. This is a moderate improvement over the P1500 series that did not include any Samsung LEDs.

The driver on the ViparSpectra XS1500 is a Mean Well HLG series 150 watt driver. It is a name many have come to rely on. The HLG Series is the highest quality of MEAN WELL, which has the highest efficiency and most stable working performance compared to other models. The XS1500 draws 149 true watts from the wall.

Not only is VIparSpectra using premium components in this newest LED grow light series, but they have kept the same solid frame and heat sink design that you see in the previous P series. It is a very sturdy, well-designed housing that dissipates heat pretty well.

Component talk aside, let's get to the numbers. I tested the XS1500 and created detailed PAR maps at 3 different hang heights. I started by testing the light in optimal conditions using 98% reflective mylar. I also tested the light as I usually do, without any reflective walls to see the true output of just the light on its own. I was happy with the PAR test results from the XS1500 and did see a slight increase overall compared to the P1500 LED grow light.

So the main differences between the Pro series & XS series are the Samsung diodes and the Mean Well driver. Those 2 things made a noticeable difference in the temperature the light runs at.. The Sosen driver on the pro series ran at 61C where the Mean Well driver on the XS series ran at 50C, which is 11 degrees cooler. The top temp on the Pro series ran at 58C where the new light runs at 54C. This seems to be a trend.

The XS1500 series does see a moderate increase in PAR and efficiency compared to the P1500. The average PPFD at 12'' is 922 in optimal testing conditions.

Some points I forgot to mention in the video is that there is a larger gap between the housing and the driver on the XS series. This may account for a bit of the temperature difference in the newer XS series. The paint is an obvious difference that I didn't mention but should also be noted. I have also been told the XS1500 has one less IR chip than the P1500 grow light.

Overall, the XS series, as well as the P series are both solid lights. The XS1500 does perform better, which is to be expected with the upgraded premium parts. I look forward to seeing what results this light will produce in my garden. This is one of the better Led grow lights you will find on AmazonHappy Growing!
