You don’t need glaze to make your ceramics shine, seriously! In this short, I’m sharing one of my favorite pottery tips: how to burnish your clay for a natural, beautiful finish without using glaze. It’s simple, satisfying, and kind of magical.

All you need is a smooth tool, think a pebble from the beach, the back of a spoon, anything with a rounded surface.. and a bit of patience of course!I’m working with clay that’s leather hard to bone dry, and with just the right pressure and motion, you’ll see how the surface starts to transform into a soft, subtle shine. That’s the burnishing magic! You’re compressing the clay particles and creating a gorgeous finish before you even fire it.

This works best with earthenware clay and a low-fire. If you go high temp, the shine fades a bit, but the surface still looks beautiful (just a little more matte). It’s an old-school technique that gives your pottery a special kind of character:)
