　上高地は冬期（例年11月16日から翌4月16日）中ノ湯から上高地までの間が閉鎖となります。
照明と歩道を完備した新釜トンネル開通後は冬季閉鎖期間中でも、徒歩により上高地に入ることが可能です。ただし、中の湯には一般向けの駐車場が存在しないため、中の湯までは、タクシー、松本-高山の路線バス、中の湯温泉旅館に宿泊して旅館の駐車場を利用の、いずれかの方法が使われます。

　上高地は、長野県松本市にある標高約1,500メートルの山岳景勝地です。中部山岳国立公園の一部として、国の文化財（特別名勝・特別天然記念物）に指定された、日本を代表する山岳リゾートです。年間140万人ものハイカーや登山客などが訪れています。

　更に登山者に人気の穂高連峰や槍ヶ岳への登山基地にもなっているので、夏のシーズンには観光客・登山客でかなりの賑わいを見せます。
清流梓川が流れ、穂高連峰や焼岳などの3000ｍ級の北アルプスの名峰が聳え立ちます。この風景は本当に感動的。夏場でも22℃前後と過ごしやすい気候です。

　大正4年6月6日(1915)、焼岳の大爆発による膨大な土砂流により梓川がせき止められた。あっという間に水は上高地温泉まで達し、大正池が誕生しました。
