Throughout the first half of 2007, Batista and The Undertaker were involved in a bitter rivalry over the World Heavyweight Championship. Their first match took place at WrestleMania 23, and on that night The Undertaker defeated Batista to win the gold. At Backlash the following month, the two powerhouses fought to a draw in a Last Man Standing match, and then had another draw inside of a steel cage on SmackDown.

On the same night that Batista and The Undertaker fought in the steel cage match, Edge chose to cash-in the Money in the Bank briefcase he had won from Mr. Kennedy. Taking advantage of a battered and beaten Undertaker, the Rated-R superstar won his third world championship in WWE. The Deadman had to take time off for an injury after this contest, allowing Batista to unsuccessfully fight Edge for the belt over the next several months.

Like The Undertaker, Edge also suffered an injury, this one being severe enough that he had to relinquish the World Heavyweight Championship. Batista would end up regaining the gold at Unforgiven 2007, overcoming both The Great Khali and Rey Mysterio to win the title. That same night, The Undertaker made his return to the squared circle, meaning that his feud with the Animal could continue.

Following a successful title defense against The Undertaker at Cyber Sunday, it was decided that Batista would defend the gold inside of Hell in a Cell. Looking to settle the score once and for all, the Deadman and Batista put it all on the line, but it would be Edge that made the final statement, returning from injury and allowing Batista to retain the title.

With three men in the world title scene, it was announced that Batista, Edge, and The Undertaker would meet at Armageddon 2007 to see who deserved to be World Heavyweight Champion. By the end of the night, fans would have a true champion, and that champion would carry the gold into the new year.
