PLEASE MR POSTMAN - MARVELETTES | FRANKS BASS COVERS #shorts2025

Released: August 1961 from the debut album: Please Mr. Postman (released April 1962)
"deliver da letta; the soona da betta"

Bass Cover Notes/corrections:
The bass line on the original recording of "Please Mr. Postman" was played by James Jamerson, who was one of the most renowned bass players in Motown's studio band, The Funk Brothers.

If James Jamerson was a MLB pitcher his greatest strength would be his total unpredictably – painting the corners, changing speeds, throwing curves in fastball counts, altering his plate delivery….his bass line is constant in that it never is the same during any verse… taking a beat between the notes, then hitting eights the next time, even when he simply runs from G G# A, sometimes its G#- A other times it’s G# pause, A….so many examples throughout this song of his brilliance which he probably laid down before lunch on a Tuesday before getting the oil changed on his car…. Amazing.

His bass line helps to drive the rhythm and groove of the song, providing a solid foundation for the vocal melody and harmonies. A classic example of the Motown style of bass playing, characterized by its simplicity, groove, and melodic approach.

The Song:
Released or the Tamla (Motown) label as a single in August 1961. It became a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1961, and remained in the top spot for one week. The song was also a #1 hit on the R&B singles chart.

The song was later included on The Marvelettes' debut album, also titled "Please Mr. Postman," which was released in April 1962.

The song was written by Georgia Dobbins, who was a member of the group, she initially came up with the idea for the song after hearing the phrase "Please Mr. Postman" in a commercial for the U.S. Postal Service.

She wrote the lyrics and melody, and brought it to the attention of the group's producer, Berry Gordy, Jr.

The song was recorded at Motown's Studio A in Detroit in the summer of 1961, with the Funk Brothers providing the backing instrumentation.

Despite some initial resistance from Motown executives, who thought the song might not be a hit, "Please Mr. Postman" became a massive success, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1961. It was the first #1 hit for Motown Records and established The Marvelettes as one of the leading girl groups of the era.

It remains one of the most recognizable and beloved songs from the Motown era, and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
