As of June 6th 2014, Yoyo Games announced that Game Maker Studio Standard will now be free to the masses forever with no limitation of resources!

This is a great opportunity for those wishing to expand their horizons in bigger and greater projects now with no limitations on the amount of resources available to them. GO NUTS!

Here are a few reasons Studio is a vast improvement over GM8.1:
No official support for GM8.1 any more.
Studio has dedicated physics support.
Studio has improved native multiplayer functionality.
Studio includes an improved debugger.
Studio now includes graphics shaders.
