The 6th lecture themed “Role of Religious Tourism in reviving the Indian Tourism Sector Post Covid-19” of International WEB Lecture Series in Tourism and Hospitality was delivered by Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas, University of Jammu and Dr Bipithalal Balakrishnan Nair, Assistant Professor, Woosong University, South Korea held on 9th May 2020 (Saturday) at 1.00 pm (IST). Participants included top academicians, students and research scholars of various universities from across the globe. This “International Web Lecture Series in Tourism and Hospitality” is an initiative taken by Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas, University of Jammu along with Dr. Ramjit, Department of Tourism Studies, Central University of Kashmir, Dr. Jeet Dogra, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM), Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India and Mr. Nikhil Singh Charak, Assistant Professor, Ambedkar University, New Delhi, India.
Mr Nikhil Singh Charak and Dr Ramjit welcomed and introduced both the experts and coordinators from India and South Korea. The proceedings of the session were initiated by Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas by welcoming the co-speaker of the session, Dr. Bipithalal Balakrishnan Nair along with the participants and coordinators of the event.
Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas in his opening remarks, apprised the participants about this international lecture series and how it is discussing real issues and challenges relevant to the Travel & Tourism industry. While reflecting upon India’s potential to grab the global religious tourism markets, Prof. Manhas explained the benefits of religious tourism by addressing the different needs of religious tourists. He contended that a growth in religious tourism will reduce India’s economic leakage and presented that how Covid – 19 has changed tourists’ approach to travel. While conceding the decline in the number of religious tourists, Prof Manhas impressed that safety, health, hygiene, brands and value can drive religious tourism during and post coronavirus outbreak.
Dr. Bipithalal Balakrishnan Nair discussed the changes that India could bring in its approach to the domestic tourism sector. She asserted that India’s widespread reach of their multicultural society provides a platform for the smooth conduct of religious tourism while reflecting upon the current market share of pilgrimage tourists. Dr. Nair went on to propose a strategy for the revival of India’s tourism sector where she emphasized on the need for the promotion of staycations, local markets, safety and micro-holidays (travel to nearby places). She further urged that India should try to relaunch and develop circuits in Covid free states to revive the current defunct pilgrimage aspect of domestic tourism. Dr. Nair also validated India’s opportunity to promote Yoga, Ayurveda and other facets of Indian society as a means of reviving religious tourism in the country.
The session was followed by question/answers wherein the speakers, Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas and Dr. Bipithalal Balakrishnan Nair responded and constructively answered to the various queries of the participants. At the end of the session, a detailed report and a vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Jeet Dogra, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM), Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India.
