Описание к видео Golf Grand Slam (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of Atlus's 1991 golf game for the NES, Golf Grand Slam.

If you were a fan of NES golf carts, then Golf Grand Slam might've induced a serious case of deja vu when it came out in late 1991. It looks and plays a lot like Bandai Golf: Challenge Pebble Beach (   • Bandai Golf: Challenge Pebble Beach (NES) ...  ), so much so that it feels like a direct sequel.

As it turns out, both were developed by TOSE. It's not a stretch to imagine that Golf Grand Slam was built on the bones of Bandai's game, especially when you consider that Challenge Pebble Beach was never released in Japan. Neither Bandai of Japan nor Hector (Golf Grand Slam's Japanese publisher) would've likely noticed that TOSE was double-dipping.

Some good work was put into updating the game, though. The course is more challenging and the gameplay has more depth. Hooks and slices play an important role in this one, and since they're often needed to counteract the effect of the wind, you now have control over your stance and grip. The game introduces a handful of special shots to give you more direct influence over how the ball carries, and it replaces the standard three-click power bar with a T&E Soft-style gauge that involves hitting the button as the cursor crosses the spot on the ball where you want the club face to make contact.

The graphics have also been improved. There's more detail, the colors are less garish, and the interface is cleaner and easier to read. The sound didn't fare so well - the music is horrible and the clapping sound is ridiculous - but on the bright side, it's less shrill than what Greg Norman's Golf Power (   • Greg Norman's Golf Power (NES) Playthrough   ) subjected us to.

Golf Grand Slam doesn't quite match the quality of the NES's best golf games, but if you're looking for something with more mechanical depth than the usual 8-bit fare, it won't disappoint.

(And check out that Engrishy leaderboard screen! I got a real kick out of it labeling me as a "reader" for playing well.)
