Q) What is Semen analysis test? 0:19

A) Semen analysis test is also known as a sperm count test, it analyses the quality of a man's sperm. Semen is the fluid containing sperm that is released during ejaculation. The test mainly measures 3 major factors of a sperm’s health.
• The number of sperms
• The shape of the sperm
• And, the movement of the sperm

Q) Why is a semen analysis test done? 0:45

A) • A semen analysis test is recommended when a couple is facing problem in conceiving, to check for male factor infertility.
• It is also requested following a vasectomy, 3 months after the procedure, to be certain that the man is sterile.

Q) What is the procedure for semen analysis? 0:58

A) Semen analysis test is the laboratory testing of freshly ejaculated semen and the test begins with a physical examination of the semen like the determination of pH, volume, viscosity and its colour. Semen is examined microscopically after staining to determine the motility, count, morphology and vitality of the sperm.

Q) What does a semen analysis report show? 0:28

A) The test report gives us a detailed breakup of the different properties of the semen along with the sperm count in the semen. They are
1. Sperm count – It should be above 15 million/mL of semen to be considered in the normal range.
2. Sperm morphology – It should be above 4% to achieve pregnancy
3. Sperm motility – Should be above 40% for successful fertilisation of an egg by a sperm
4. Volume of semen – Should be in the range of 2-5mL, if its low, then the male could be suffering from a blockage in the ejaculatory duct
5. Liquefaction time- The semen should liquify in 15-30 minutes time otherwise motility would be affected.
6. Appearance – Should be greyish white in colour, yellow colour semen or green colour semen might be due to some infection.
7. pH balance – Should be between 7.2-7.8. If the pH is more it can be due to an infection, and if it's less it might suggest a blockage in the ejaculatory duct
8. Vitality – At least 58% of the sperms should be alive for a successful pregnancy
9. Fructose level – a positive fructose test in semen is normal, an absence of fructose might indicate the problem with the seminal vesicles.
10. White blood cells – WBC counts should be less than 1 million/mL of semen, more counts suggest infection.

Q) What does an abnormal semen analysis report mean? 3:45

A) An abnormal semen analysis report would mean that either the sperm count is low, or the sperms have poor motility or morphology which can affect fertility. The acidity of the semen and the presence of WBC may also affect fertility.

Q) What should you do in case you find your semen analysis report to be abnormal? 4:07

A) Only one abnormal report wouldn’t mean that you are infertile. The report can be affected by a recent illness, anxiety or other factors. It is best to repeat the test after one or two weeks and compare the reports.
In case of repeated abnormal reports, you can visit us at Medicover Fertility, where we would analyse your semen analysis report to give a proper diagnosis and suggest the best treatment plan.
