A cybercrime group known as Clop, reportedly based in Russia, has issued an ultimatum to British and other targeted companies following a large-scale hack of payroll data. The breach, which occurred last week, affected several organizations including the BBC, British Airways, and Boots. The group has allegedly posted a notice on the dark web, written in broken English, warning affected companies to contact them before June 14 or risk having their private data published.

In a purported blog post, Clop claimed to have downloaded a significant amount of data through an exploit, specifically targeting companies using the Progress MOVEit product. The post encouraged victim organizations to initiate negotiations by sending an email to the hackers through their dark web portal. Employers are being advised not to pay any ransom demands made by the hackers.

The hackers gained access to the data by exploiting a popular business software service called MOVEit and subsequently breached the databases of potentially hundreds of companies. Among the other organizations targeted were Aer Lingus, the government of Nova Scotia in Canada, and the University of Rochester in the United States.

Zellis, the leading payroll provider in the UK, confirmed that eight of its customers were affected by this "global issue," potentially exposing personal information such as names, addresses, and banking details.

On Monday, Microsoft analysts attributed the hack to Clop based on the techniques employed during the breach.
