It’s one of the toughest prisons in the world, and now, the Trump administration is using it as both a deportation tool and a photo opportunity.

Both the President and Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary, have defended their decision to deport 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador’s maximum-security CECOT prison.

The U.S. government claims these men are dangerous members of the Tren de Aragua gang – a group deemed as terrorists in the days leading up to the deportation flight.

However, as the plane was in the air, a federal judge blocked the order to deport, and since then, lawyers have come forward claiming the innocence of some of the deported men. This raises the question: is this legal?
