For eight years, it was the loudest show on TV. A lone beacon in the cable wilderness where rock gods weren't just respected... they were worshipped. It was the only place on television where millions of metal fans could find a home, a community, and a voice. For 14 seasons and 125 episodes, it was a genuine cultural phenomenon. And then, on January 19th, 2016, it all went silent. VH1, the very network that built it, suddenly pulled the plug, leaving legions of devoted fans and the show's hosts wondering… what the hell just happened? This is the story of how three guys just talking about their favorite bands started a movement, and why the institution they built was suddenly wiped from the airwaves. This is the Rise and Death of *That Metal Show*.

Back on November 15, 2008, VH1 Classic—a channel pretty much dedicated to the ghosts of music TV's past—took a gamble on something totally new. They launched a show with a deceptively simple idea: get three die-hard music fans in a room to talk about hard rock and heavy metal. At a time when its parent networks, MTV and VH1, had ditched music videos for reality shows about teen moms and celebrity rehab, That Metal Show felt like an act of rebellion. It was described in its own ‘press release as "'The View' meets 'Headbangers' Ball,'" a weekly spot to discuss, debate, and celebrate everything in the world of metal. Other interviews hailed the show as a cross between teh best damn sports show and the view.

The show's real power came from its hosts. They were the genuine. At the center was Eddie ‘i’ve hung out with all those guys’ Trunk, a veteran music journalist and radio host whose knowledge of the genre was just insane. Flanking him were comedians and best friends Don Jamieson and one time Robin Quivers love interest Jim Florentine, whose quick wit and fanboy perspective were the perfect balance to Trunk’s expert authority. Florentine told The Great Falls Tribune “basically, it’s a half hour. We sit around and crack jokes and have guests on to just mess around with them and get em’ involved in whatever bits were doing. It’s great to have a show and get paid and actually get paid to talk about it. When i’ve been talking to drunks for hyears in bars about black sabbath and whose a better singer ozzy or dio. Now, i can get paid for it. And while the View is always brought up in interviews about that metal show, Florentine was quick to point out that unlike the women on the show the disagreements aren’t personal adding ‘Those broads over there are the view. God forbid if someone says they like mccain. Forget it, they’re stupid and won’t talk to for the rest of the day. It’s crazy.

”Their chemistry wasn't faked for the cameras; it was the real deal—the same energy you'd get from three buddies arguing about bands at a bar. This authenticity was the engine of the show. It was a program made by fans, for fans, and that single difference is what made it a hit.

The idea for the show came from Eddie I know everybody in that band trunk and VH1 showed interest in making it happen. It was at that point trunk brought in florentine and jameson The first season nabbed high profile quests like Neal Peart and Geddy Lee from Rush, Jay Jay French and Dee Snider from Twisted sister. Even former newy ork mets catcher mike piazza appeared on the first season.

As for what era of music the show focused on Florentine was quick to point out that because they are on vh1 classic the idea was to focus on bands who predated the 90’s. Adding nothing new nothing about lamb of god or slipknot i’d love to cause i love those bands but it really doesn’t fit the format. Now i will say this didn’t hold true past the first season.

Speaking of the format was simple but brilliant. Each episode had interviews with rock royalty, sure, but it was the recurring segments that became the show's heartbeat and created a real community. You had "The Throwdown," where the hosts would get into passionate debates over classic rock arguments, like the endless war between Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. There was "The TMS Top 5," where the hosts and guests would rank everything from guitar solos to albums with awful c
