Maritime transport emits around 940 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This is about 2.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The European Commission's target is to reduce emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050. AIRCOAT project is developing a bioinspired solution that will reduce friction on ships, lowering fuel consumption and thus GHG emissions from shipping.
In June 2021, the AIRCOAT project went to Malta to test the bioinspired air layer on the research vessel of one of the partners AquaBioTech Group. This is the result of over 3 years of research funded by the Horizon 2020 program.
