A 'Rattleback' is a specially shaped spinning top. It has a semi-ellipsoidal rounded top which will rotate on its axis but only in a preferred direction. If however it is spun in the opposite direction, it becomes unstable, starts to rock or "rattle", then the spin comes to a stop, whilst the rocking continues and then reverses its spin to the preferred direction.
