The Indian rupee slipped to a fresh record low on December 16, closing at 91.0325 against the US dollar, amid persistent dollar demand and growing macroeconomic pressures. The currency opened at 90.7900 and weakened further from its previous close of 90.7337. Experts cited delays in the India–US trade deal, sustained FPI outflows, widening current account deficit, exporter dollar hoarding, debt market selling, tax-related liquidity stress, and speculative oil buying as key factors behind the sharp depreciation.
Market participants also flagged concerns over large stake sales worth nearly $50 billion, limited foreign inflows, and buy-sell swap pressures contributing to rupee volatility, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.
In market structure news, a Gurgaon-based high-frequency trading (HFT) firm, Graviton Research, has emerged as a dominant force in India’s intraday cash market. During 2025, the firm executed at least 1,900 intraday bulk deals worth ₹1.6 lakh crore, with an average trade size of nearly ₹85 crore. Over 450 of these trades exceeded ₹100 crore, underscoring the growing influence of algorithmic trading in Indian equities.
On the corporate front, Ola Electric Mobility co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal sold 2.6 crore shares (0.6% stake) via a bulk deal at an average price of ₹34.99 per share, valuing the transaction at ₹92 crore. Despite narrowing its quarterly net loss to ₹418 crore, the company’s revenue declined 43.2% year-on-year to ₹690 crore, impacted by lower volumes.
Meanwhile, Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL) has announced its entry into the packaged foods segment with the relaunch of its legacy brand SIL. The 75-year-old brand will serve as RCPL’s flagship foods offering, with products spanning noodles, jams, ketchups, sauces and spreads, marking Reliance’s broader push into the FMCG foods space.
