Welcome to Day 4 of our boating adventure! Today, we’re setting off from the charming coastal town of Cape May, New Jersey, and heading towards the C&D Canal, a historic and scenic waterway connecting the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay. This leg of the journey brings beautiful vistas, unique wildlife sightings, and smooth, relaxed cruising—perfect for soaking up the experience!
1. Departing Cape May
We start the day in Cape May, known for its quaint Victorian houses and vibrant marina. As we prepare the boat for departure, we review the route, weather, and navigational points. The morning light over Cape May’s waterfront creates the perfect sendoff as we wave goodbye to New Jersey and steer toward the Delaware Bay.
2. Cruising the Delaware Bay
The Delaware Bay offers open waters with calm conditions, giving us a comfortable cruising experience and a chance to take in the panoramic views. We discuss the history of the bay, notable points of interest, and the wildlife we encounter along the way. Dolphins, seabirds, and even the occasional seal make appearances, adding to the magic of the journey.
3. Navigating into the C&D Canal
As we approach the C&D Canal entrance, we prepare for the unique experience of cruising this 14-mile man-made channel. Opened in 1829, the C&D Canal has played an essential role in regional trade and transportation for nearly two centuries. The canal’s smooth, protected waters make for relaxing passage, allowing us to enjoy the surrounding landscape, including lush forests and riverside towns.

The C&D Canal provides a fascinating contrast to open waters with its quiet, scenic stretches and narrow passageways.
