A causa della pandemia, abbiamo accettato temporaneamente restrizioni alle libertà personali senza precedenti. Eppure, se ci guardiamo intorno, vediamo che la libertà manca ovunque. Se prestiamo attenzione, possiamo sentire le urla, o i sussurri, degli oppressi. Oggi i paesi del mondo pienamente liberi sono meno della metà. E molte esperienze mostrano che la crescita economica e il benessere sociale non sono necessariamente correlati con un maggiore grado di libertà. Ma allora, a cosa serve la libertà, se una società può stare meglio anche senza essere libera?

What is freedom for?

Due to the pandemic, we have temporarily accepted unprecedented restrictions on personal freedoms. Yet, if we look around us, we see that freedom is lacking everywhere. If we pay attention, we can hear the screams, or whispers, of the oppressed. Today the fully free countries in the world are less than a half. And many experiences show that economic growth and social well-being are not necessarily correlated with a greater degree of freedom. So, what is freedom for, if a society can get better even without being free? Massimiliano Valerii è direttore generale del Censis. Dopo gli studi in Filosofia a Roma, si è dedicato alla ricerca sociale, economica e territoriale. È il curatore dell’annuale Rapporto sulla situazione sociale del Paese, considerato uno dei più qualificati e completi strumenti di interpretazione della realtà socio-economica italiana. Massimiliano Valerii is director general at Censis. After studying philosophy in Rome, he devoted himself to social and economic research. He is the editor of the annual Rapporto sulla situazione sociale del Paese, considered one of the most qualified and complete tools for interpreting the Italian socio-economic situation. He is author of La notte di un’epoca (2019) and Il contagio del desiderio (2020), both published by Ponte alle Grazie.
