The Black Dog of the Wild Forest is a Romani story first collected by John Sampson in the 19th Century from a traveller family living in north Wales. It was published in his 'Gypsy Folk Tales' (1899). As is typical for Romani folklore, this eerie and dreamlike story is connected to a much older oral tradition with roots stretching deep into Indo-European Mythology.

Black dogs, Black Shucks and spectral hounds are a popular feature of British and Irish Folklore, Myths and Legends. They can represent guardian spirits, or guides between worlds, or conversely as omens of death, and harbingers doom, depression and hopelessness.
