October 16th, 1946, Nuremberg Prison—ten Nazi war criminals faced the gallows in a converted gymnasium. But the executioner was a fraud who had lied about his experience. Master Sergeant John C. Woods botched multiple hangings, causing agonizing deaths by slow strangulation instead of quick broken necks. Joachim von Ribbentrop, Hitler's Foreign Minister, took 18 minutes to die, groaning and struggling behind the black curtain. Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel strangled for 28 minutes, witnesses hearing him pray as he choked. Julius Streicher, the antisemitic publisher, screamed "Heil Hitler!" and "Purimfest 1946!" before dropping—then took 20 minutes to die while the executioner possibly pulled his legs to speed the strangulation. Some condemned men hit their faces on the trapdoor as they fell, bleeding and conscious. Several wet themselves in terror before the drop. Hermann Göring cheated the gallows by swallowing cyanide two hours before his scheduled execution. The hangings took 103 minutes total—ten men executed between 1:11 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. Post-execution photographs showed facial injuries on several bodies. Witnesses reported hearing groaning, choking, struggling sounds for minutes after each drop. This wasn't justice—it was botched execution by an incompetent hangman who may have deliberately made them suffer.
