What Is a Chemo Port and Why Is It Used?
A chemo port is a small implanted device placed under the skin to make chemotherapy delivery smoother. We use it when patients require long-term chemotherapy cycles. It reduces needle pricks, protects veins, and makes the process manageable. But the question arises—once treatment is done, when should we get it removed?

Why We Don’t Remove It Immediately After Chemotherapy?
Patients often feel anxious once chemotherapy ends. They want to remove the port quickly to feel “normal” again. But I usually advise my patients to wait. We do not remove the port immediately after the last chemotherapy session. We typically wait for 6 months to 1 year before taking it out. This isn’t just a random buffer period—it serves a real medical purpose.

Understanding the Risk of Cancer Recurrence
Many cancers in India are diagnosed in advanced or locally advanced stages. Even after successful chemotherapy, we know that the highest risk of recurrence exists during the first two years after treatment. If cancer comes back in this period, patients may require another round of chemotherapy, scans, or blood tests. In such situations, having a chemo port already in place saves time, effort, pain, and money.

Cost and Complexity of Re-inserting a Port
The removal process of a chemo port is simple. It takes only 10 to 15 minutes in an OPD setting. But re-inserting a chemo port is a surgical process. It requires an operating theatre, anesthesia, sterile setup, and significant cost. That’s why we wait before removing it—to avoid repeating the entire surgical process if the disease relapses in a short time.

Factors That Influence the Decision
We don’t base the decision to remove the port only on time. We also evaluate:
The stage of cancer when diagnosed
The aggressiveness of the tumor
The overall health status of the patient
The probability of recurrence

If we believe the patient has a low risk of recurrence and is doing well, we may remove it closer to the 6-month mark. For higher-risk cases, we may recommend waiting for a year.
