Dial Up Internet on Windows 3.11 at 9600bps

Описание к видео Dial Up Internet on Windows 3.11 at 9600bps

Following up on the 300bps video, here is a (slightly) more modern machine connecting to Reddit at 9600bps using Netscape 3, running on Windows 3.11 and DOS 6.22, and of course using the venerable Trumpet Winsock.

For those unfamiliar with Trumpet, at the time Windows did not include TCP/IP networking by default. Instead, it provided an API called 'Winsock' that defined how network applications (e.g. Netscape) should talk to network services (e.g. the internet). Generally your ISP would provide you with a third-party program that implemented this API that you would use to access the internet. In a lot of cases, that was Trumpet Winsock. Starting with Windows 95, this was included with the OS.

In the video I am dialing up using an in-house phone system and ISP, details about which can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworki...

Hardware-wise, this machine is a recreation of my first Windows PC, after migrating from an Amiga 500. It was a bit of a frankenstein that I had purchased at a garage sale, initially featuring a 386DX @ 25MHz, 4MB RAM, and an 80MB hard disk. I upgraded it a number of times, notably adding the sound card, CD-ROM, extra RAM, a much larger hard disk, the faster processor, and the math coprocessor.

Parts:
- Texas Instruments TX486DLC @ 40 MHz + 4C87DLC
- Caching Tech C386MX Motherboard
- 8 MB RAM (8x1MB 30-pin SIMMs)
- ATI VGA Wonder+ (512 KB)
