Food Web Interactions in Marine Ecosystems: From Urban to Offshore Environments

Presented by: Dr. Eleonora Puccinelli
Principal Investigator, Department of Coastal Systems (COS),
Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ).

In this talk, Dr. Eleonora Puccinelli, a marine trophic ecologist, delves into the intricate relationships within marine ecosystems. She explores how natural and human-driven processes impact trophic interactions and contribute to broader ecosystem effects, such as biogeochemical cycling, environmental regulation, and marine food production.

Focusing on primary consumers like benthos and zooplankton, Dr. Puccinelli examines how both top-down and bottom-up processes influence their distribution and ecosystem roles. She presents findings from three distinct case studies in an upwelling system, an urban coastal area, and a shallow open sea, shedding light on the impacts of factors like upwelling, pollution, and climate change on these crucial marine communities.
