STORYLINE:
The head of Libya's National Transitional Council met military and civilian revolutionary fighters in Tripoli on Wednesday to discuss their future in the new Libya.
Mustafa Abdul-Jalil told the revolutionary fighters they could either join the national army or national security, or return to their civilian lives.
"If anyone (revolutionaries) wants to join the national army or the national security, there will be good salaries, and this is the job of the new warrior's committee," Jalil said at a news conference.
The announcement was welcomed with applause.
Jalil said that revolutionary fighters who took on forces loyal to the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi would be represented in the National Transitional Council.
Revolutionary fighters could also apply for a one-off loan to start a small or medium-sized business, he said.
Jalil called on the former rebels to come up with a list of candidates for the position of commander-in-chief of the national army.
Speaking after the news conference, Abdul Basset Haroun, commander of the Abu Salem Brigade, said that "both military and civilian revolutionaries will suggest a name and they will appoint a chief of staff."
Earlier in December, the NTC said it was planning to have a working army and police force up and running in 100 days time.
