I couldn't find a good children's biography of Lyell, so I've done my best to present Lyell and his contributions myself! Historically, people thought that the Earth was only a few thousand years old, and that all the species that exist had always existed, and were the only species to ever exist. This assumption was challenged by the discover of fossils that looked like relatives of existing species, but clearly were no longer around. Lyell had adventures across four continents, and collected hundreds of rock and fossil samples, then performed a very simple calculation that indicated that the Earth had to be at least tens of thousands of years old.

For your assignment, look at your complete herbarium collection. In complete sentences, write how you think the world of 500 million years ago suddenly became populated with land plants (mosses), then about 80 million years later (420 million years ago) land plants with true leaves and roots and stems appear (club mosses and ferns), then about 70 million years after that (350 million years ago) seed plants appear (gymnosperms), then 200 million years after that (150 million years ago) flowering and fruit plants appear.
