Lesson Objective: To understand the depth and meaning of the promises found in the Abrahamic Covenant. Main Ideas: 1) God calls Abram to leave Haran, where his father and family are and go to a land that God will show him. 2) By doing so God promises 7 incredible blessings and benefits that will come to Abram for his obedience. 3) The Abrahamic Covenant can be summarized by saying that it is God’s promise to create a nation from the family of Abram, and that nation is to be a blessing to the world. This promise includes land, physical descendants, prosperity, protect and benefit to others.

So what exactly is the Abrahamic Covenant?

Everything that we have gone through so far: Creation, the flood, humanity’s restart with the sons of Noah and the genealogies have all been leading up to Abram, son of Terah. A man whom God will select as a key individual through whom he will continue his plan to rescue and restore humanity.

Remember that Terah, Abram and his wife Sarai, and his nephew Lot have left Ur of the Chaldes and headed north to a town called Haran (the same name of Abram’s brother, not sure the connection there). We don’t even know how long Abram has settled in Haran when God calls him, but one thing is unmistakable.

God calls him to leave.

Now, God isn’t just saying that he needs to leave for the sake of leaving, but God has something big in store for Abram and to activate it, he must leave his new home in Haran and head over to the land of Canaan. Of course, God doesn’t even give him this much. Instead, He simply asks Abram to trust him and go. And Abram does:

Now the LORD had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.

2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 12:1-3
