Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum History

Istanbul Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum is the first museum that covers Turkish-Islamic works collectively.

The current house, the only private palace other than the Sultan's palaces to reach the route, may date back to the 16th century.

The soup kitchen building in the Süleymaniye Mosque Complex, one of Mimar Sinan's most important buildings, was opened to visitors in 1914, under the name "Evkaf-ı İslâmiye Museum" (Islamic Foundations Museum).

In 1983, the management of Sultanahmet Square was moved to Ibrahim Pasha Palace.

Ibrahim Pasha Palace, one of the important structures of the Ottoman civil structure, rises above the old hippodrome levels in the "Horse Square".

In 1520, it was repaired by Suleiman the Magnificent and dedicated to his son-in-law and vizier İbrahim Pasha. The first part of the museum can be reached from this terrace via stairs.

The works in the museum, which exhibit a small number of examples from the Abbasid, Mamluk, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, were collected from different corners of the Islamic world.

The museum is known for having one of the best carpet collections in the world. The masterpiece pieces among the carpets are Seljuk examples from the 13th century.

The large glass windows in the large halls contain an extraordinarily rich collection of Turkish carpets.

The museum, which continued its restoration in 2012, received the Special Jury Prize of the Council of Europe Museum of the Year Competition in 1984 and the European Council-UNESCO level of endearing children's cultural heritage in 1985.
