On September 9th, a collective of student organizations led by Black Students for Revolution will be hosting a rally calling for the radical transformation of higher education within the United States. During the rally, students will present a set of demands that will serve as our guide as we seek to abolish state violence within this institution. The rally will be held in solidarity with the nation-wide prisoner strike occurring on the same day.

Join us as we call for a transformed university and the abolition of all prisons!

[Sunny Ture] What’s up everybody. My name is Sunny Ture. I’m a colead organizer with a local student org named Black Students for Revolution here to tell you about an event we got coming up called a Rally for A Transformed University.

[Karen Olowu] Over the past year we’ve been working on a list of demands to present to the student body and the purpose of these demands is to galvanize a popular movement that will enact transformative change to higher education in the united states.

[Sunny Ture] Sept 9 we’re gonna be on the quad with about a dozen other student organizaitions and community organizations calling for an end of student fees tuition and the end of student debt.

[Karen Olowu] These demands touch on tuition, it touches on worker’s rights, it talks about reproductive justice and also sexual violence – all the issues that students at a public university in the united states face.

[Sunny Ture] We got politicians like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton saying they can give this to us through a political process. But we know, we know that movements like this are only won from the bottom up not the top down. It’s going to be a student movement that’s going to win these things for us. These are the things that we need.

[Karen Olowu] We believe that the change that we see cannot be achieved without us demanding for that change and we’re taking a lot of cues from student movements across the world – particularly the Fees Must Fall movement in South Africa.

[Sunny Ture] The current system of higher education is not sustainable. It is not sustainable. So we have to change it. The students have to change it. So September 9th come meet us here. Noon right here on the quad. Black Students for Revolution, we’ll be here. Peace.
