The episode begins with Eleven and her friends hiding at Hopper’s cabin. They know the Mind Flayer is hunting them. Suddenly, the monster attacks the cabin and smashes through the walls. Eleven fights back using her telekinesis and holds the creature off so everyone can escape. But during the fight, the Mind Flayer stabs her leg with a piece of itself.
The group runs to an empty store to help Eleven. They pull the moving piece out of her leg, but something is wrong. When Eleven wakes up, she realizes she can no longer use her powers. For th first time, she is powerless.
At the same time, Hopper, Joyce, Alexei, and Murray reach Starcourt Mall. Alexei explains that the Russians are trying to reopen the gate to the Upside Down using a powerful machine hidden under the mall. If the machine is not stopped, Hawkins will be destroyed.
Elsewhere in the mall, Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica are hiding after escaping the Russian base. The two groups finally meet and share what they know. Now they understand the truth: Starcourt Mall is the center of everything.
Meanwhile, Billy, controlled by the Mind Flayer, drives toward the mall. The creature speaks through him and knows that Eleven is weak now. The danger is closer than ever.
The episode ends with everyone heading toward Starcourt Mall, knowing a final battle is coming. Eleven is injured. The enemy is ready. And nothing will be the same again.
