STORYLINE:

The violence continued in Iraq on Monday with both civilians and US troops coming under attack.

A senior oil official was injured and his son killed when assailants opened fire on their car in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, according to their family.

Mohammed Ahmed Zibari, the Northern Oil Company's distribution manager, was on his way to work when gunmen riddled his car, his brother told APTN.

In Tikrit it was the turn of US soldiers to come under fire. This time however there were no injuries when unidentified attackers fired a rocket into the 4th Infantry Division's walled headquarters.

Tikrit, a desert town of about 120-thousand people 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Baghdad, lies in the heartland of the Sunni triangle, an area where support for Saddam was strongest.

Anti-American sentiment in the area is strong. On Friday, a Black Hawk helicopter believed to have been hit by a rocket crashed near Tikrit, killing six soldiers.

During weekend raids in the area, US forces seized nearly one thousand rockets.

Soldiers from the division's 3rd Brigade also confiscated 15-hundred rounds of 155 mm artillery shells in Balad, south of Tikrit, according to division spokeswoman.
