Matthew 26:36-46 Immediately after finishing His last supper in the upper room, Jesus and his disciples cross the Kidron Valley heading towards the Mount of Olives and comes to the place on the hill called Gethsemane, which in Hebrew means "oil press." Like an olive in the jaws of a press, Jesus is on the verge of being crushed for the sins of humanity, bringing forth a much more valuable kind of oil: the oil of the Holy Spirit, which is to be given to all who believe in Christ "It pleased the Lord to crush him, putting him to grief..." (Isaiah 53:10). There is profound mystery in the suffering of the Son of God who became man, and thus, it is not possible for us to plumb the depths of the agony that Jesus Christ suffered in Gethsemane and Golgotha. In 2 Corinthians 5:21 St. Paul wrote, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us,” and in Galatians 3:13 he wrote, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” As the Cross drew near , Jesus said, for this very cause I came. Cross is the pivotal reason for which Jesus was born. Bible says that for the joy set before Him He endured the Cross bringing many sons to glory. Yes Jesus came to pay a heavy price. So now He is one step before that and His soul is deeply grieved. He is crying out to the Father to remove that cup from Him. What is there in that cup that causes him to shudder with terror? It was more than the Cross He carried. It was the wrath of God for the sins of humanity. A unique cup given to Him to drink, and Jesus endured this extraordinary experience once and for all. This cup grieved him but He drank it and became our Savior paving the way to eternal life. "Gethsemane" serves as a prequel to "The Power of the Cross". He bridged the gap between the Holy God and the sinful man. There is no other way. He is the Only way to the heavenly Father and that's why He suffered. He needs us back. He paid a heavy price and purchased us. Come back to the place of Intimacy, closer to Jesus.
