EnergyPathways PLC (AIM:EPP) CEO Ben Clube spoke with Proactive about the company’s MESH project, a major long-duration energy storage solution intended to address the UK's renewable energy challenges.

Clube outlined the significant problem of wind energy curtailment, where surplus wind power that cannot be absorbed by the grid results in wind farms being paid to shut down. This is currently costing UK consumers around £1 billion annually, and forecast to rise to £6-8b by 2030. He explained that MESH aims to store this excess power and release it when needed, helping to reduce consumer bills and improve energy efficiency.

The government has recognised MESH as a project of national significance under Section 35, allowing for a streamlined planning and approval process. He also detailed its use of compressed air, hydrogen and gas storage systems, noting that the project will deliver multi-day energy storage at competitive cost.

Strategic partners such as Siemens Energy and Hazer are contributing to the technology and hydrogen production elements. The graphite byproduct from the methane pyrolysis process is also critical to the UK’s supply of battery-grade materials, with potential for a large revenue stream if purified for EV and battery use.
