Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, or MIGS, is a surgical procedure that treats mild to moderate glaucoma by reducing eye pressure and improving fluid drainage out of the eye. MIGS is a safer alternative to traditional anti-glaucoma surgeries like trabeculectomy, with fewer risks and side effects and a faster recovery time. Here are some of the benefits of MIGS. Its safety is good, and MIGS has a lower risk of complications like infections, hypotony and scarring, and recovery time is fast. MIGS patients recover faster than those under traditional glaucoma surgeries, and the success rates of MIGS are higher than traditional glaucoma surgeries. Minimal tissue disruption will be there, and MIGS uses microscopic instruments to make a small incision and insert a device through the cornea. This minimises the tissue disruption and trauma to the eye. MIGS can be performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with cataract surgery. During the procedure, your eye is anaesthetised with a local injection and a small incision is made in front of the eye. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes. After surgery, your surgeon will prescribe antibiotic drops and anti-inflammatory eye drops. You should be able to stop using your usual anti-glaucoma drops as advised by your doctor.
