The MCU shifted a lot post Endgame. What would be known as Phase 4, starting with Wandavision and ending with the Guardians Holiday Special, saw the MCU birth more content than ever before. Content being the most operative word for a franchise that now creates shows, films, special presentations, shorts and just about anything it can push out and package up so that cape stuff is flying at your eyeballs practically every month of the year.

Black Panther was more emotional but wasn’t very enjoyable to watch with its overstuffed runtime. Doctor Strange featured stellar direction but the story decisions left it feeling a mess. The whole phase is a malaise of excitement and disappointment, good ideas and bad execution, returning favourites and wonky introductions.

How does anything feel connected? Even the multiverse movies don’t have consistent rules and logic. It’s impossible to tell when anything is set in relation to anything else and it hasn’t really built up any hype working towards Kang and the Secret Wars.

At one point I considered going through all these in chronological order and just telling you which ones I liked but I thought you’d call it a cop out and rightfully so. I then wanted to put everything in order as one big ranking but quickly found it didn’t do justice to what worked and what didn’t from Wandavision to the Guardians Holiday Special. Ranking six hour series to two hour movies to 40 minute specials doesn’t really work; I might find one thing more rewatchable than another but it could have less to do with the quality and more to do with the runtime. So I tried to stop thinking about the ranking in this way and instead give you a ranking divided into films and shows.
