Abstract: This paper focuses on modeling, designing, and simulation of a cost-effective hybrid filter for compensation of current harmonics from source current. The presented hybrid filter consists of two single tuned passive power filter tuned to the 5th and 7th component of the fundamental frequency. Whereas shunt active power filter is designed to compensate higher order of harmonics. This reduces the kVA rating of the shunt active filter. Detailed design of passive filer and the active filter is presented in this paper. Various simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed filter using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The control algorithm to control active filter is successfully implemented in dSPACE/ds1104 board and experimental results are presented showing unity power factor and low current THD at the source side.
