In comparison to rolling your own EC2 Launcher, script executor, and AMI creation shell scripts, Packer providers a simpler alternative with less to think about. There are some tradeoffs to consider; however, when it comes to building a simple Golden Image to EC2, Azure, or GCP -- or even VMWare, Packer is a very good choice for a DevOps engineer to consider. By only having to focus on what actually needs to be ran on the instance itself, the image creation process is less tedious.

This video covers a few main concepts:
1. install.sh -- the execution on a server to install Docker, AWS CLI, CodeDeploy Agent, and an extra script, claim_eip.sh -- a way to automatically associate an elastic IP to an instance.
2. Overview of the packer installation .hcl definition.
3. A brief discussion on the installation process as a whole.

This is part 1 of a larger series necessary to build out the EC2 + CodeDeploy architecture for Docker-based applications.
