Big Rock Trains Join To Form One Train! Train Cautiously Creeps Down Hill, Crosses Railroad Bridge & Couples Onto 2nd Rock Train, Then Reverses With Both Locomotives In The Middle! Listen To The SD40-2 Rumble While Running Long Hood Forward! This is the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad, a short line railroad that operates 69+ route miles of Norfolk Southern Railroad track in southern Ohio.
First we see the train at the Summit Road railroad crossing in Batavia Township. This is near the top of the grade that drops down into the Batavia valley. The SD40-2 is the biggest locomotive on the CCET roster and the only 6 axle unit. That was cool watching it run long hood forward just like Norfolk & Western did on this same line back in the day.
Next we see the train crossing the railroad overpass that goes over Main Street in Batavia. Just an hour earlier I was on Main Street about a block west of here getting a new license sticker for my amateur radio plates. I had my scanner turned on and on the way home I heard the EOT activate on 452.9375 so I figured there was a rock train on its way to Milford since the rock trains are the only trains that regularly use the EOT. I went to Alton Yard and found the train getting ready to leave and heard the crew talking on 160.860 so I went to Summit Road to start the chase.
After Main Street I headed to Round Bottom Road and found the 2nd rock train being unloaded on the main line. Then I went back east and filmed the opposite side of the train passing Binning Road. This is the road that I played on when I was little and watched N&W trains. It is very narrow and only one lane wide. I almost bought my first home on this road back in 1985. It sat right next to the tracks but my wife didn't like it because it was too small.
The final scene is an interesting railroad crossing at Beechwood Road and Round Bottom Road in South Milford, Ohio. I remember when they put this crossing in. Anyway, we get to see the train reverse across the crossing and head toward Broadwell Road in Newtown to finish their week next to their office. A railroad worker was parked next to the crossing to make sure the crossing gates and lights activated properly and to watch the train approach the crossing. That was pretty cool watching the train running with 2 locomotives in the middle. The trains on CCET have grown into longer trains as you can see. 2 trains operating at once is common now that the gravel shuttle trains are operating. This branch line has come a long way since the Norfolk Southern days. At the end of the NS days there was only 1 train running a week and most of those trains didn't make it past Afton around Mile Post 31. Now the trains run all the way to Mile Post 75 and occasionally run to 78 for storage cars.
This train has gondola cars and hopper cars used for rock, boxcars for Huhtamaki that ship paper rolls and scrap paper and covered hopper cars from Mt Carmel Group next to Batavia Huhtamaki. The locomotives are their EMD SD40-2 and one of their 2 EMD GP15-1 units.
