BELVER........

Belver is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Gavião, in the Alentejo region.
At the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, a wave of assaults by the forces of the Almohad Caliphate, under the command of the caliph Yacub Almançor, determined the retreat of the Christian borders to the line of the Tagus river. In this context, in 1194, D. Sancho I donated the region between the river Zêzere and the river Tagus, called Guidintesta, Guidi in testa or even Costa, to the prior of the Order of Hospitallers, D. Afonso Pais, to build a castle there. , called Belver.
Belver Castle is worth mentioning, as it was the first castle built by the Hospitallers, in order to defend the border territory of the Tagus valley, and one of the most imposing that the Order built in Portugal.
During the reign of Sancho II of Portugal (1223-1248) money from the royal treasury was kept here.
A National Monument since 1910, it is one of the most complete examples of medieval military architecture in the country. The fortress underwent some modifications over the centuries, but its original structure is practically intact.

Belver é uma freguesia portuguesa do município do Gavião, na região do Alentejo.
À época da Reconquista cristã da Península Ibérica, uma onda de assaltos das forças do Califado Almóada, sob o comando do califa Iacube Almançor, determinou o recuo das fronteiras cristãs para a linha do rio Tejo. Nesse contexto, em 1194, D. Sancho I doou a região entre o rio Zêzere e o rio Tejo, denominada Guidintesta, Guidi in testa ou ainda Costa, ao prior da Ordem dos Hospitalários, D. Afonso Pais, para ali se construir um castelo, denominado de Belver.
O castelo de Belver merece destaque, tendo sido o primeiro castelo edificado pelos Hospitalários, a fim de defender o território raiano do vale do Tejo, e um dos mais imponentes que a Ordem construiu em Portugal.
Durante o reinado de Sancho II de Portugal (1223-1248) guardavam-se aqui os dinheiros do tesouro real.
Monumento Nacional desde 1910 é um dos exemplares mais completos da arquitetura medieval militar existente no país. A fortaleza foi objeto de algumas modificações ao longo dos séculos, mas mantém praticamente intacta a sua primitiva estrutura.
