► Public domain film. Sports documentary produced by the Selig Polyscope studio in 1900 with unidentified director.
1) Footage ofootage of the entire boxing match between champion Terrence McGovern and African-American Joe Gans that took place on December 13 of that year. However, of the entire original film, only almost two minutes of the end of the film remain preserved and were reproduced in a television documentary shown here.
2) This fight was won by McGovern who knocked Gans out 2 minutes into the second round; it turns out that Gans used the "dive" technique, which means the fighter throws himself to the ground as part of a defeat manipulation. As a result, after this fight boxing was banned in Chicago for the next 26 years, only officially returning in 1926.
