Retaking the MCAT depends on your goals, your score, and where you’re applying—so it’s not a one-size-fits-all answer. But here’s a guide to help you decide if retaking is the right move:

🔍 What’s Considered “Below Average”?
The average MCAT score for accepted students is around 511–512 (top 82–85 percentile).


If you scored below 500, that’s considered low for most MD programs.


For DO schools, scores around 502–506 may still be competitive.



❗ You Should Consider Retaking If:
Your score is significantly below your target schools’ averages.


One section was much lower than the others (suggesting a fluke or content gap).


You were unwell, unprepared, or had test-day issues that don’t reflect your potential.


You’ve made a solid, new study plan and are confident you can improve.

🚫 You Might Not Need to Retake If:
