Bernd Jäger first performed the Jaeger in 1974, but only after a very similar skill existed on the women’s side. Jäger's coach Richard Karstedt suggested that he try a variation on the “Janz roll,” popularized by 1972 Olympic Champion Karin Janz. At the 1974 World Championships, Jager performed the release skill, which preceded the Deltchev, Gienger, and Tkatchev and created a new brand of skills incorporating a release, salto, and regrasp.

The Janz roll essentially was what we now consider a Jaeger, although immediately following a (now-impossible) belly beat. Since the bars are set so far apart, both the technique of “beating the bar” and the “Janz roll” are now rendered physically impossible skills.

Nonetheless the Janz roll served as motivation for the new Jaeger release.

The “Camaneci salto,” however created prior to the 1976 Olympics, was named when Nadia caught the skill in Montreal. Another example of a coach inventing a skill, Bela Karolyi reportedly created the concept and taught Comaneci to catch the release. The salto is not considered a Jaeger release since the skill begins from a cast; however once airborne, is very similar to a current day Jaeger. Inclusion in this video is to illustrate the evolution of the Jaeger family of skills and differences between skills.

Henrietta Onodi’s style of Jaeger (low and close) represented many of the releases of the 1980s due to bars’ distance.

Fan Di was one of the first female gymnasts to exhibit a full swing into and out of the Jaeger, plus displayed awe-inspiring height.

Lu Li pirouetted into, and performed her Jaeger from inverted giants.

Amy Chow displayed a stalder-pirouette-Jaeger-Pak combination, displaying a current combination seen today.

He Kexin did not create the Jaeger-half to recatch; it’s instead named for Li Ya, as she completed it first. Kexin, however popularized the skill combination and successfully competed it several times at the highest level. She also performed a layout Jaeger in her routine.

Chloe LaCoursiere first posted the Jaeger-full in a training video but will unlikely have the opportunity to compete it at a FIG event, so Sunisa Lee currently appears to be the likely representative of the skill in the Code of Points.
