INS Varsha is a top-secret Indian Navy underground naval base being developed near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on the east coast of India.

It is primarily meant to house and support India’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), such as the Arihant-class and future submarines.

The base will reduce the load on INS Kalinga and Visakhapatnam Port, providing a dedicated, secure, and hidden facility for strategic assets.

Its strategic location allows direct access to the Bay of Bengal, crucial for patrolling the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and maintaining India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence (part of the Nuclear Triad).

INS Varsha is expected to have hardened underground pens, modern docking facilities, command centers, and high-security infrastructure to protect submarines from surveillance or attacks.

It is often compared to the Yulin Naval Base in China (Hainan Island), as both serve as underground shelters for nuclear submarines.
