Fond Ferdinand Reserve, Anse Boudin Beach, Glacier Noir Trail on Praslin Seychelles - Between the leaves, scary spiders build their extended nets. After all, they can reach - when stretched out - a size of 20 cm, but they are completely harmless for humans. The red-legged golden orb-weaver spider, Nephila inaurata, more commonly known as the palm spider in the Seychelles, is a large spider belonging to the golden orb-weaver spider family, found in southern and east Africa, as well as several islands of the Indian Ocean.
Known for their quick growth rates, females mature in roughly four months and can be as large as a human hand with a leg span of approximately 100 mm. Adult males are much smaller (leg span of 25-30 mm) and have very little colour in comparison to the large females. Known as a generalist species, this spider is able to build its web anchored to any surface, with a web so strong that even birds and bats can be caught.
Fond Ferdinand Reserve: Hike through an ancient palm forest and see the indigenous coco de mer tree at Fond Ferdinand, a large nature reserve with a diversity of animals and plants. Spanning some 150 hectares the park features a safe, stone-built trail extending for over 2 km (1.2 mi) through the largest number of sea coconut trees in the world. View six endemic palm trees and the rare Gastonia, Bwa sagay and Seychelles' aphloia plants. Bring binoculars for excellent bird-watching opportunities. Compared to the great well-known sister Vallée de Mai, the Fond Ferdinand Nature Reserve, which opened in 2013, is still an insider’s tip on the island of Praslin, as significantly more tourists visit the former. Here is practically a densely overgrown jungle. If trees or leaves fall due to age or weather conditions, they will be left lying. Therefore, the reserve looks rather wild and natural. A total of 600 steps are divided into 23 stations, where there are interesting things to see. are about 850 Coco de Mer palms in the Ferdinand Fond and of which about 800 to 900 seeds (only those that fall off) are collected each year. Since the seeds of Coco de Mer with a weight of up to 30 to 40 kg are the largest seeds of the plant kingdom and still look very interesting, they are very popular as souvenirs with tourists. Therefore, 80 of the collected seeds are sold as (certified) souvenirs and 20 are used for the re-breeding of the palm trees. It is interesting that the maturation of a seed can take up to seven years and a palm usually only produces one seed per year.
Anse Boudin is close to the coastal road leading to Anse Lazio. It is a long slender beach with very soft sands and calm sea for swimming and snorkelling. Refreshments can be purchased in a small shop situated at the T-junction on the way to Anse Lazio.Anse Boudin is a romantic destination surrounded by beach and island views.
Glacis Noir Trail: The gradual climb will let you see the Glacis Noir. The most amazing things to do in Praslin, but steps are the most challenging part. Wear good walking shoes, as some trails can slippery.
The first half of the walk up is on a wide, cleared path (as wide as a road). The first part is in the sunshine but most of the walk is shaded. After passing a picnic bench the path narrows although it is still well cleared as of May 2018. It some places it's steep and slippery. Would advise walking shoes or trainers.
At the top of the trail is a partially derelict lookout tower. Great views towards La Digue. A nice breeze after a hot walk. If you're intrepid you could probably climb the tower and get a great view from the top platforms (it has a sturdy metal frame) but be careful as the wood planks look rotten... I went up to the first floor but spotted some large lizards inside the second floor hut so didn't try to climb up any further!
