When it comes to getting a good idea of what extinct animals sound like, it’s often a tricky thing. For almost all extinct species, we may never exactly know what they sounded like, but by using the animal’s closest cousins still alive today and animals of a similar size, we can get a good but not 100% accurate idea of what they sounded like. Case in point, the Paraceratherium. Larger than any land animal alive today yet sporting a neck like a giraffe, this herbivorous mammal was closest related to rhinos. Both belong to Perissodactyla, with the modern representatives being rhinos, equines (zebras, horses, etc), and tapirs. Strangely, despite the members of Perissodactyla being heavy animals, most of their vocalizations are high pitched (rhinos squeal and squeak, zebras bark, horses whinny, tapirs squeak). By using their vocalizations and the vocalizations of animals similar in size to Paraceratherium, I tried reconstructing what this Oligocene titan sounded like. I even divided the sounds into different categories.
