3 Steve Vai Licks From 1988

Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Steve Vai Licks From 1988. This episode is a continuation of the "Playing With Feel" series that was introduced in August/September. We took a break from the series over the last few months, but I wanted to return to this concept for a few more lessons, as playing the guitar using a controlled, emotive attack is where it's at! Expanding your ideas/options and playing with "feel" is important to make the things you play really stand out and grab a listener's attention and draw attention to what you're playing - so let's dive in!

The material in this lesson came from a bootleg concert in 1988, which was during Vai's time playing alongside David Lee Roth on the famous 'Skyscraper' tour from that year. This footage from the tour really captures Steve at his fiery best, which was during his important explosion/growth period when he was post-Zappa, but pre-Passion And Warfare. This is also one of my favorite periods of his historic and beyond-impressive career.

The ideas shared here include a controlled 12-second bending workout, an aggressive/expressive repeated bending phrase, one of Steve's signature slip-n-slide melodic phrases, and a finger-twisting smeared tapped bending idea that will surely give both hands a huge challenge - but it's such a cool idea!

Needless to say, if you're a Steve Vai fan, a player searching for some mind/technique-expanding ideas to practice, or just want to shake things up a bit in your practice routine/material - this lesson is totally for you!
