Chord melody is a signature sound of solo jazz guitarists, but it can also be applied to any song with a strong, consistent melodic structure.

In this lesson the immensely talented, and popular guitar teacher Mitchell Thomas masterfully breaks down how to build a chord melody arrangement. He starts with teaching the melody alone, chords alone , then combining the two. Mitchell takes this approach throughout this lesson, all while sharing ideas to help you build your own chord melody arrangements of your favorite songs.

The first song is the very accessible folk standard “Michael, Row The Boat Ashore.” As simple as this song is, Mitchell manages to methodically build a beautiful arrangement that digs into the foundations of its timeless style. From there he teaches “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”, which adds a nice B Part on the treble strings. Continuing to get more complex, Mitchell chose the ever-popular “Shady Grove” in D Minor.

This delightful lesson concludes with Irving Berlin’s classic “Blue Skies” following the AABA form that is frequently found in the Great American Song Book. In “Blue Skies” he introduces some terrific altered chord voicings, jazz chord shapes, a 1-6-2-5 turnaround, and much more.
