Daniel Simmons, a recent graduate of American Fork High in Utah, broke the national high school record in the 5,000 meters on Sunday at Lincoln High in Portland at the Portland Track Festival. Simmons ran a time of 13:25.86 racing in a field of professionals. With the result, Simmons will likely earn a berth in the U.S. Olympic Trials, although he missed the automatic qualifying standard by less than a second. Simmons stripped nine seconds off the prep record set in 2023 by Lex Young of Newbury Park CA, who ran 13:34.96.
