Lydia Pecker, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, outlines the reasons fertility may be affected in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), such as differences in age at menarche and menopause which give female patients a narrower fertile window. Dr Pecker emphasizes the importance of talking to SCD patients about their family plans in order to allow any disease-related infertility risks to be addressed.
