In this reading from The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we hear the inspiring account of St Jodocus (also known as St Josse) — a 7th-century Breton prince who renounced royal power to pursue a life of prayer, penance, pilgrimage, and contemplation.

Born into the royal family of Brittany, St Jodocus rejected the crown offered to him after his brother, King Judicael, also renounced worldly rule. After days of fasting and prayer to discern God’s will, Jodocus chose the clerical life and eventually embraced the hermit’s vocation.

He lived many years in solitude along the coast of Gaul, supported by tilling the land, prayer, and charity to the poor. With the protection of a faithful duke, St Jodocus founded hermitages and chapels dedicated to St Martin, St Peter, and St Paul, and even made a penitential pilgrimage to Rome.

St Jodocus died in 669 AD, renowned for holiness and miracles both before and after death. His hermitage later became a famous Benedictine monastery, eventually entrusted to Alcuin by Charlemagne.

This saint is commemorated on December 13 in the Roman Martyrology.
