In this video Salvatore Vinciguerra travels to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. He shares with you the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and his hike to Grotto Falls.

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a wonderland of waterfalls. This 6 mile scenic driving loop will take you 2-3 hours to complete with a variety of historic buildings and hiking trails along the way.

The Motor Nature Trail can be accessed off the main parkway in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The roads are quite hidden as some of the roads in and out of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are not labeled well enough for tourists.

Directions: Main Parkway go south, at traffic light #8, turn left onto the Historic Trail road to the Cherokee Orchard rd and then Roaring Fork Rd. For more details on driving directions from you location please use Google Maps.

Tips: This is a day trip so make sure that you pack a lunch and the provisions that you will need for a couple of hours.

Once you turn on the road there is no turning back as there are no visitor centers or restrooms available. The Motor Nature Trails is one big loop.

**Large RV's, Buses, Trailers, and Large Trucks are not permitted on the Motor Nature Trail. This is a one way street that can be very narrow and steep.

Salvatore first shares with you some of the oldest buildings located in the National park. He first starts off showing you the Noah "Bud" Ogle farmstead and then gives you the history of the Great Smoky Mountains. Salvatore then shares with you his hike to Grotto Falls, historic buildings located at the end of the Motor Nature Trail, The Place of a Thousand Drips, and Ely's Mill. Rainbow falls, and Baskins Creek Falls are also located along the motor trail.

Salvatore recommends that you check the National Park Service's Website to make sure that the motor trail and hiking trails are open at the time of year that you are going to visit. They usually close the Motor Nature Trail in Winter because of snow.

The hike to Grotto Falls is accessed by taking the trail head to the Trillium Gap Trail. This hike is easier than some others in the park and is about 2.5 miles. It is a 285 foot scenic ascent crossing 4 streams which has many opportunities to see a variety of plants and wildlife along the way. Salvatore encountered seeing a salamander habitat on the side of a rock. The Great Smoky Mountains is one of very few places that has five families of Salamander living in the area. You can continue the hike on the trail past Grotto Falls to discover Mount Le Conte. Make sure that you bring plenty of food and water.

Be Bear Aware in this area as it is one of the places where you can see bears in the wild. Salvatore did get to see one of the bears that was in the area of Alfred Reagan place and Ephraim Bales Place.

At the end of the driving tour don't forget to stop at Salvatore's favorite gift shop in the smokies located in Ely's Mill. The gift shop has a variety items for sale by local craftsmen.
